Alpha-Lipoic Acid Battles Diabetes

Source: Men’s Fitness, May, 2002

Alpha-lipoic acid, a natural antioxidant that can influence the rate at which blood sugar is burned, may conceivably help prevent diabetes. An analysis of recent studies confirms that ALA supplements reduce a variety of neuropathic symptoms common to diabetes, including pain, burning sensation and numbness, and may be even more effective when combined with other antioxidants.

Diabetics experience oxidative stress due to elevated glucose levels, which compromise antioxidant reserves.

“Perhaps this agent may yet show its greatest benefits in long-term preventative therapy,” concludes the report, published in Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology.

ALA is made by the body and is found in broccoli, beef and other foods.
